FACIAL PEELS

WHAT ARE FACIAL PEELS (CHEMICAL PEELS)?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that can be applied to the face, hands, and neck. They’re used to improve the appearance or feel of the skin. During this procedure, chemical solutions will be applied to the area being treated, which causes the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off.

There are a number of reasons people may get chemical peels. They may be trying to treat a variety of things, including:

  • wrinkles and fine lines
  • sun damage
  • acne scars
  • hyperpigmentation
  • scars
  • melasma
  • uneven skin tone or redness

Medical Grade Jessners is a medical-grade peel that contains 14% lactic acid, 14% salicylic acid, and 14% resorcinol. This combination delivers a medium to deep peel. It’s one of the most effective light cosmetic peels you will find available and is frequently combined with other peels or procedures like our HydraFacial or IPL treatments.

TCA Peel 10%-30% is an effective chemical agent used to exfoliate and renew skin. TCA can be used to exclusively peel isolated areas of the skin, but it is important to note that with applying any peel, it is important to first begin building up the skin’s tolerance by using a daily exfoliator for about a week prior to peel application.

Chemical peels exfoliate the skin’s uppermost layers to brighten the skin and provide a more even skin tone. We offer two degrees of facial peels from SkinMedica: Illuminize and Vitalize Chemical Peels:

ILLUMINIZE PEEL

illuminize-peel
ILLUMINIZE PEEL

This non-invasive, very superficial chemical peel utilizes a novel approach to chemical peeling with a newer generation of alpha-hydroxy acids (mandelic and malic acid) combined with phytic acid and commonly used peeling agents (salicylic acid and resorcinol) to maximize skin rejuvenating effects with low irritation.

FAQ

Treated areas take about seven to 14 days to heal after a medium chemical peel, but redness might last for months. After a deep Facial Peels (Chemical Peels), you’ll experience severe redness and swelling.

  • Picking at the skin
  • Skipping sunscreen
  • Letting the skin dry out
  • Not applying moisturizer
  • Applying too much moisturizer
  • Being afraid of cold compresses
  • Exfoliating
  • Expecting immediate results
  • Not staying hydrated
  • Drinking excessive alcohol

Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) damages the skin in a controlled manner, producing a superficial wound. Since most skin peels damage the skin, there is a period of recovery necessary. There are risks, including scarring, infection, and undesirable color changes as with any surgical procedure.

Peeling will generally start 48-72 hours after your treatment and can last 2-5 days. It is essential not to pick off peeling skin; peeling is minimal and easily controlled with moisturizer. Premature peeling of the skin will result in dry, cracked, raw skin that may develop into hyperpigmentation.

You will notice a visible improvement in your skin after one Facial Peel (Chemical Peel), but the best results are obtained with multiple treatments over time. Just as it takes time for skin damage to accumulate, it also takes time to reverse it.

Wet skin for at least 12-24 hours after the Facial Peel (Chemical Peel) is applied. No water, no products, no moisturizers, no makeup. This includes hot showers, saunas, and sweaty cardiovascular exercise. Just use a light, gentle moisturizer and let the skin do what it wants to do naturally.

Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) can be used to improve the appearance of acne scars, melasma, sun-damaged skin, wrinkles, and several other conditions. They can also be used to lighten dark spots. Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) for lightening dark spots use chemical agents that enable the removal of the skin pigment melanin.

Darkening of the skin is normal for the first 24-36 hours of the Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) treatment. The skin must become dry and tighter, giving the appearance of a darker skin tone. The darkening is caused due to the healing process, the treatment of spots, and the formation of crusty skin.

Those who need or want light Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) can usually get them every month. For more intense treatments, like medium Facial Peels (Chemical Peels), it’s advisable to wait four or six months between appointments. Those who wish to get deep Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) should only do so once every few years.

It is not advisable to wear makeup immediately after a Facial Peels (Chemical Peels). Depending on the strength of the peel you get, it can take two to three days for your skin to start peeling. After that, your skin can take two to five days to finish peeling.

Skin grows back about 10 to 14 days after a deep Facial Peel (Chemical Peel). The skin stays very red for 3 weeks, and up to 2 months for some people. Most people take about 2 weeks off from work. Complete healing of the skin may take several months.

Light Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) can cost as low as $150, and deep Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) can cost $3,000 or more (specifically if it requires anesthesia or in-patient stays). According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the current average cost of a chemical peel is $673.

It is generally advised to get Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) every four to six weeks. However, if you suffer from acne, there are some peels that you can do every two weeks until you find the expected results. Most people buy a series of four or five peels upfront to achieve the treatment results wanted

For deeper wrinkles, medium or deep Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) is the best option. For rough skin caused by sun damage, microdermabrasion or a light chemical peel will work. But for some people, it’s a less ideal option because of its higher cost and downtime, making microdermabrasion a better choice.

Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) uses a chemical solution to remove layers of skin, revealing the more youthful skin underneath. Chemical peels can reduce or improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin coloring, and other skin imperfections.

Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) is usually a very safe procedure performed by a qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. While very rare, infection or scarring are risks from chemical peeling treatments.

First few days – you may notice some dryness, irritation, and mild swelling. Two to Three days – your skin may look flaky or peeled, and discolorations or imperfections may temporarily be more noticeable. Three to four days – you may breakout or notice skin looks tan or slightly darker than usual.

When you start to peel, use a non-comedogenic moisturizer such as Aveeno, Vanicream, Cetaphil, or CeraVe until the skin feels back to normal. This will promote the healing process by locking in moisture and reducing the chance of a bacterial infection, redness, and irritation.

IPL therapy is a skin rejuvenation process that uses intense pulses of light that penetrate deep into the skin. Facial Peels (Chemical Peels) reveal younger, healthier, softer skin lying beneath the surface. They’re excellent for treating acne scars, uneven skin pigmentation, and fine lines. They also enhance collagen production.

This can be done by either sleeping in a recliner tilted at 45 degrees or sleeping with two pillows underneath your head. Avoid rolling onto your face. Sleeping on your back for the first two weeks helps to ensure this.

It is important to moisturize after a chemical peel. … Moisturizers will not prevent the peeling process, as it is part of the chemical peel process. Patients will want to avoid harsh moisturizers and go for a neutral moisturizer that is light on additives.

You may go outside, but sunscreen must be worn for at least a few days after the peel, as your skin will likely be a little more sensitive to sun exposure. How many chemical peels should I have, and how often is it recommended? Many individuals find that a peel performed every four to six weeks gives optimal results.

Tonya is amazing!! She made me feel so comfortable and really listened to my concerns about my skin. She really cares and knows what she is doing. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!! I was concerned my first appointment but I just had my third and I can say it’s so worth it!!! Botox has been an incredible experience and I’m so happy to have tried it, I’m so much happier with my appearance and it looks incredibly natural. I’ve included before and after photos, neither photo is filtered or edited, you can see how makeup would collect in my forehead, and how the after it’s smooth and looks so lovely. It doesn’t feel weird or like I can’t move my muscles at all, it feels super natural. One of my biggest concerns was that I wouldn’t be able to emote with Botox but that’s just not true at all. I feel so confident and that is thanks to Tonya!

FACIAL PEELS (CHEMICAL PEELS)
PROCEDURE PREP

Before your treatment session, our physician will discuss what to expect during your treatment. However, it is helpful to remember that there are a few things to take into consideration before your session:

  • At least three to four days before your procedure, discontinue anti-inflammatory medications.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue any blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue systematic steroids
  • At least one month before your procedure, stop steroid injections
  • On the day of your procedure, eat a full, healthy breakfast and be sure to drink plenty of water
  • Please be advised that if you take chronic oral steroids, a discontinuation plan will need to be discussed with your primary care provider as abrupt stoppage may cause side effects.

FACIAL PEELS (CHEMICAL PEELS)
AFTERCARE

After your treatment session, we recommend that all patients rest on the day of their procedure. We advise limited use of the treatment area for the next two days, but the movement is encouraged. Limited use helps the joint recover as the treatment is absorbed by the area’s surrounding tissues.

0 – 3 days post-procedure guidelines

  • After your treatment, there is a chance you’ll experience some mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site. Discomfort is normal, and it is a sign that your body is healing as it adjusts to the treatment.
  • It is best to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help promote healing.
  • You mustn’t take ANY medications following your procedure unless specifically directed otherwise by a physician. NO medicine is a must because any drug can affect the healing process or other adverse effects.

Therefore, discontinue use of any of these medications post-procedure for best results:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications for at least two weeks post-procedure
  • Blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins for 3-4 days post-procedure
  • Systemic steroids for two weeks post-procedure
  • Other important guidelines to follow after your procedure are:
  • Avoid applying ice or heat to the injection site for the first 72 hours post-procedure
  • Don’t take a hot bath or go to a sauna for the first few days post-procedure
  • Avoid consumption of any alcoholic beverages for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid showering for the first 24 hours following your procedure
  • Limit caffeine consumption for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid smoking

3 – 14 days post-procedure guidelines

  • At this point in your healing, you should gradually increase your daily activities.
  • 3 to 14 days is also when you can begin exercises. Proper exercise is a vital part of long-term results, and we can help you determine which exercises are best suited for your needs before your procedure.
  • Ice can be applied 3-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes as needed for comfort
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (such as Tylenol) can be taken to help manage any residual pain at this time, take as directed
  • Continue to avoid alcoholic beverages, smoking, or excessive amounts of caffeine

3 – 4 weeks post-procedure guidelines

  • We highly encourage you to begin physical therapy to aid in your long-term healing and continued recovery at this point in your healing.
  • A follow-up appointment will be made for you to meet with our physician to review your healing process. You must keep this follow-up visit even if your recovery is going well.
  • If there are any adjustments to your customized treatment plan, this is when our physician will be able to make those decisions.
