LASER HAIR REMOVAL

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted is well absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling numerous follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair’s growth. Your specialist uses the highest technology lasers with unparalleled treatment efficacies in hair removal, significantly thinner hairs that other lasers cannot target.

IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PAINFUL?

The laser treatment itself can cause a slight tingling or heat sensation. With the patented DCD cooling system of the laser, patients tolerate the procedure very well. Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia can be an option but is rarely required.

HOW LONG DO THE LASER TREATMENTS TAKE?

The treatment time can vary considerably depending on the size of the area treated and the particular technique used. A small area such as the upper lip may take only five minutes, while a larger area like the back or legs may take up to 45 minutes. Since the laser affects only those hairs in the growing stage, and not all strands will be in this stage simultaneously, several treatments will most likely be needed to effectively remove all the hair from one area. Subsequent sessions will be scheduled at least one month apart. You will probably begin to notice the re-growth of hairs previously in the resting stage by this time.

HOW MANY LASER TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

Although the FDA has approved several types of laser for permanent hair reduction, results can vary. An individual’s metabolism, hormonal level, hair quality, and the number of hair follicles can affect the outcome.

Moreover, normal hair goes through a growth cycle in three stages: the anagen, or growing phase; the telogen, or resting phase; and the catagen, or transitional phase. Hair is susceptible to the laser’s energy during the anagen phase, but it is resistant during the telogen and catagen phases.

At any one time, various percentages of body hair will be in each of these phases, making complete removal unlikely without multiple sessions.

Typically five or six treatments are necessary to achieve the desired result.

SANDIA SKIN + FACE
LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal is a safe, FDA-approved treatment designed to rid you of unwanted hair permanently. Lasers are precise and can disable hair follicles. Unlike “hair-by-hair” treatments like electrolysis, the laser treats many hairs at once.

Unwanted body hair can be a real turn-off. Whether you’re spending the better portion of your morning tweezing your chin, shaving your legs, shaping your eyebrows, or using unpleasant smelling chemicals to get rid of arm hair, the time and effort you spend could be better used.

The laser hair removal process is simple. A numbing cream is applied to your skin. The laser is pulsed for a millisecond emitting a beam of light onto the skin. The light energy passes harmlessly through the skin but is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft. The laser works by disabling hair in the active growth stage at the time of treatment.

Because not all hairs are in this stage during treatment, additional treatments will be necessary to disable all the hair follicles in the treated area. Treatments are usually given at intervals of 4-6 weeks.

We use the “Forever Bare BBL Hero,” sends multiple, lower-fluency pulses at a high repetition rate for a quicker, more effective treatment. Having both wavelengths in one device allows every Fitzpatrick skin type to be optimally treated.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
FAQ

It is important to shave before your laser hair removal appointment. Twenty-four hours before is recommended. Shaving on the day of your session can be dangerous and should be avoided altogether, as when you shave, the razor may lift a layer of skin off as it passes over your skin.

In many patients, the skin is slightly pink for 1-2 days; in others (generally, fairer patients), there is no pinkness after laser hair removal. Hairs begin to fall out in 5-14 days and may continue to do so for weeks.

  • Make sure you don’t wax, pluck or bleach the area you are having treated 4 weeks before commencing treatment or at any time during treatment.
  • Stay out of the sun and avoid the use of solariums and self-tanning creams for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to treatment
  • Shave the area to be treated 24 hours prior to your treatment, this will promote a stronger current in the laser which will mean better results.
  • Don’t do any activities prior to coming in for treatment that will make you hot and sweaty. I.e. going to the gym, spas or saunas.

On the day before your treatment, you should shave with a clean, new razor. By shaving, the lasers will be able to locate the follicles. Using a clean, new razor ensures no lingering bacteria could cause contact dermatitis after your laser treatment.

If you don’t shave before your appointment, the laser will singe the hair resulting in a burn to your skin. In addition, if the hair hasn’t been shaved properly, treatment will not be as effective, and it may result in small temporary grazes on the top layer of your skin.

Exfoliating frequently (scrub or continued shaving) will help speed up the shedding process. Hair growth will be less after each treatment. The laser targets the pigment in the hair. The darker the hair, the better the result.

Freshly shaved is the best for treatment. If you can’t resist waxing, allow hair to grow in for at least one week before a laser appointment. And although it takes several months for full laser hair removal, you can also shave in-between visits.

Laser hair removal works better on some people than others since everyone regrows hair at different rates. But the average results you can expect is for 70% to 80% of hair regrowth reduction after a complete four to six courses of treatments. At the three-treatment mark, at least 50% of your hair will be gone forever.

Why do hairs continue to grow after the treatment? This is mainly due to the hair’s growth cycle. Hairs in the anagen or active phase will be affected by the laser. The hairs in the catagen or dormant stage will be unaffected during the treatment and grow when it goes to the anagen phase.

Even though the hair may eventually return, if the laser did its job on the targeted follicles, it will usually appear lighter or thinner upon any regrowth. Some hair growth is normal, and the appearance of your unwanted hair is a solvable problem that follow-up treatments down the road can quickly remedy.

Since hot water can burn and blister the skin, it is good to take cool showers after getting laser treatment. You will want to avoid taking a hot shower for up to 48 hours getting the treatment.

Depending on your Laser Hair Removal treatment, it can take anywhere between 15 min – 1 hour. Your initial laser hair removal consultation may take slightly longer. We assess your needs and expectations and your hair and skin type and determine a laser treatment regime that suits you.

We usually recommend 6-12 sessions. Each body part has a different hair growth cycle, so the hair loss will vary depending on what phase your follicles are in at the time of treatment.

Yes – you can still have laser hair removal treatment while on your period. We advise you to wear a tampon or menstrual cup if you would like to have the Brazilian area treated.

You might notice redness and some swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal. To reduce any discomfort, apply ice to the treated area. If you have a skin reaction immediately after laser hair removal, the doctor might apply a steroid cream to the affected area.

All of the treated hair should be shed out within three weeks of each treatment. During the shedding phase, hair may look like it’s growing, but it is shedding out. Exfoliating and/or scrubbing gently in the shower with a loofa can help speed up the shedding process.

If you want too long between treatments, your hair follicles won’t be damaged enough to stop growing hair. You’ll see an initial thinning, but your results will fade, and it won’t be long before you’re back to normal hair growth.

  • Redness and irritation. Laser hair removal damages the follicles of the targeted hairs
  • Crusting. Some people may experience skin crusting in the affected area
  • Changes in skin color. Some people may notice minor color changes to the treated area of skin
  • Eye injury
  • Risk of skin infection

Tonya is amazing!! She made me feel so comfortable and really listened to my concerns about my skin. She really cares and knows what she is doing. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!! I was concerned my first appointment but I just had my third and I can say it’s so worth it!!! Botox has been an incredible experience and I’m so happy to have tried it, I’m so much happier with my appearance and it looks incredibly natural. I’ve included before and after photos, neither photo is filtered or edited, you can see how makeup would collect in my forehead, and how the after it’s smooth and looks so lovely. It doesn’t feel weird or like I can’t move my muscles at all, it feels super natural. One of my biggest concerns was that I wouldn’t be able to emote with Botox but that’s just not true at all. I feel so confident and that is thanks to Tonya!

  • At least three to four days before your procedure, discontinue anti-inflammatory medications.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue any blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue systematic steroids
  • At least one month before your procedure, stop steroid injections
  • On the day of your procedure, eat a full, healthy breakfast and be sure to drink plenty of water
  • Please be advised that if you take chronic oral steroids, a discontinuation plan will need to be discussed with your primary care provider as abrupt stoppage may cause side effects.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
AFTERCARE

After your treatment session, we recommend that all patients rest on the day of their procedure. We advise limited use of the treatment area for the next two days, but the movement is encouraged. Limited use helps the joint recover as the treatment is absorbed by the area’s surrounding tissues.

0 – 3 days post-procedure guidelines

  • After your treatment, there is a chance you’ll experience some mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site. Discomfort is normal, and it is a sign that your body is healing as it adjusts to the treatment.
  • It is best to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help promote healing.
  • You mustn’t take ANY medications following your procedure unless specifically directed otherwise by a physician. NO medicine is a must because any drug can affect the healing process or other adverse effects.

Therefore, discontinue use of any of these medications post-procedure for best results:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications for at least two weeks post-procedure
  • Blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins for 3-4 days post-procedure
  • Systematic steroids for two weeks post-procedure
  • Other important guidelines to follow after your procedure are:
  • Avoid applying ice or heat to the injection site for the first 72 hours post-procedure
  • Don’t take a hot bath or go to a sauna for the first few days post-procedure
  • Avoid consumption of any alcoholic beverages for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid showering for the first 24 hours following your procedure
  • Limit caffeine consumption for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid smoking

3 – 14 days post-procedure guidelines

  • At this point in your healing, you should gradually increase your daily activities.
  • 3 to 14 days is also when you can begin exercises. Proper exercise is a vital part of long-term results, and we can help you determine which exercises are best suited for your needs before your procedure.
  • Ice can be applied 3-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes as needed for comfort
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (such as Tylenol) can be taken to help manage any residual pain at this time, taken as directed
  • Continue to avoid alcoholic beverages, smoking, or excessive amounts of caffeine

3 – 4 weeks post-procedure guidelines

  • We highly encourage you to begin physical therapy to aid in your long-term healing and continued recovery at this point in your healing.
  • A follow-up appointment will be made for you to meet with our physician to review your healing process. You must keep this follow-up visit even if your recovery is going well.
  • If there are any adjustments to your customized treatment plan, this is when our physician will be able to make those decisions.
