It’s that “me time” that we’ve promised ourselves for too long that’s ready for us to address. You’ve looked in the mirror, and perhaps you’ve got a wrinkle or two that you hadn’t noticed before. What to do?

It’s time to consider the Wrinkle Relaxation injection known as BOTOX®.

But, you wisely want to do some research before you pick up the phone and make an appointment. Research is always the wisest first step. We wrote this BOTOX FAQ article to address the best patient questions about Botox and assist you in your research.

OK, let’s get started!

1. WHAT IS BOTOX®?

Botox is the brand name of a neurotoxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Other brands, such as Dysport and Xeomin, also use Clostridium botulinum. These wrinkle-relaxing injectables are also known as Neuromodulators.

Botox is the most frequently used term you hear because it was the first injectable bacterium, Clostridium botulinum toxin.

Botox is one of the most common Cosmetic Procedures that we humans do for ourselves each year.

7. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® AND FILLERS?

People get these two types of injectables confused quite often, but here’s an easy way to distinguish between the two:

● Botox® is for relaxing wrinkles in the face that cause wrinkles;
● Facial fillers fill the facial void areas with a gel made of hyaluronic acid, which helps to plump and lift the skin, replacing volume loss as we age.

8. HOW DOES BOTOX® REMOVE WRINKLES?

In layperson terms, when Botox® is injected directly into a muscle, Botox® blocks the muscle’s nerve signals and temporarily relaxes the muscle. When the injected facial muscle is relaxed, wrinkles caused by muscle movement soften or disappear entirely.

9. DO BOTOX® INJECTIONS HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

● Muscle weakness near the injection sites
● Slight bruising near the injection sites
● Bleeding near the injection sites
● Redness near the injection sites
● Swelling near the injection sites

After your first follow-up treatment, you should be able to expect your Botox treatment results to begin lasting longer.

13. SHOULD I BE OVER 40 TO START USING BOTOX®?

Your age is not what determines when BOTOX® is right for you. It’s the severity of your wrinkles. 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30s.

The reality is that everyone’s wrinkles begin at a different age. Influencing the timing of wrinkle formation is a combination of factors, including cellular changes that may occur over time, the reduction of collagen, genetic factors, or damage caused by the sun and the environment.

Whichever age your wrinkles start to bother you, speak with your medical specialist or physician. They can help you determine if treatment is proper for you.

14. HOW MUCH TIME WILL A BOTOX® TREATMENT TAKE?

Your Botox injection specialist will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. If the Sandia Skin + Face team deems you to be a proper Botox candidate and the schedule allows, the injection might occur on that same day.

Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a pinch with one’s fingers. Your Botox specialist may use ice to numb the treatment area. Optionally, if you are concerned about discomfort, your specialist may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

Treatment requires minimal downtime. You can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave your specialist’s office.

Each patient’s results will vary slightly. One may notice Botox results in as little as 24 to 48 hours, with full results visible in 30 days. Results typically last up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines.

Remember that results vary from patient to patient, so your Botox specialist will plan your follow-up appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.

17. HOW MANY BOTOX® INJECTIONS WILL I NEED?

We customize each patient’s treatment with BOTOX® to their goals and needs.

When you meet with your Botox specialist, she will determine the appropriate treatment for any areas you wish to address, including moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines, among others.

Below are a few examples:

For crow’s feet, your Botox specialist will inject three areas of the muscle that frame each side of the eye. We repeat the injection on the facial muscle that frames your other eye.

For frown lines, your Botox specialist will administer ~5 injections into the muscles between your brows and into your forehead.

For the forehead lines area, your specialist will administer ~5 injections into the muscles of your forehead.

There is no such thing as a “generic” form of BOTOX® Cosmetic. FDA labeling states that BOTOX® Cosmetic is not interchangeable with any other product. If it doesn’t say BOTOX® Cosmetic on the vial, it isn’t BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Other cosmetic injectables use the same neurotoxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum used by Botox Cosmetic. These other brands, such as Dysport and Xeomin, also use Clostridium botulinum.

21. WHAT DO I DO TO PREPARE FOR A BOTOX® TREATMENT?

Typically, a week before your Botox treatment, most physicians will advise their patients to stop consuming alcohol or taking medications or supplements that can thin their blood (like aspirin, ibuprofen, Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng). After the procedure, eliminating these medications and nutritional supplements will help minimize any bruising.

23. WHAT IS A BOTOX® LIP FLIP?

A Botox Lip Flip is a non-surgical cosmetic injection procedure. Botox Lip Flips help you achieve a fuller upper lip without a dermal filler.

The Botox Lip Flip procedure involves injecting Botox into your upper lip. The Botox injection relaxes the lip muscles and “flips” your lip upward. Compared to a dermal filler, a Botox Lip Flip is a less expensive solution because a Lip Flip uses only a few units of Botox.

A Botox Lip Flip can be an excellent solution compared to dermal fillers for those patients who prefer a more subtle lip enhancement. Botox Lip Flips also works well for those who wish to enhance the shape of their upper lip with minimal effort.

The effects of a Botox Lip Flip will last for about two months. Botox typically lasts for approximately 3-4 months, but Lip Flips don’t last as long for several reasons. A key reason is that a Lip Flip involves Botox injections to the lip muscle, which we constantly move throughout the day.
