PRP INJECTIONS

WHAT ARE PRP INJECTIONS (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA) TREATMENTS?

PRP INJECTIONS (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA), also known as “autologous conditioned plasma.” PLATELET-RICH PLASMA INJECTIONS is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells.

Besides the use in clinical practice, PRP is utilized for various tissue engineering applications in bone, cartilage, skin, and soft tissue repair. PRP has been reviewed to serve as a source for the “delivery of growth factors and/or cells within tissue-engineered constructs, often in combination with biomaterials.”

There are four general categories of preparation of PRP based on its leukocyte and fibrin content: leukocyte-rich PRP (L-PRP), leukocyte reduced PRP (P-PRP; leukocyte reduced or pure PRP), leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin, and pure platelet-rich fibrin.

At Sandia Skin + Face, we used Next Generation PRP – Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from SELPHYL®.

The SELPHYL® System is designed for the safe and rapid preparation of Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from a small blood sample at the patient’s point of care. Many PRP systems require operator skills, have varying results, and have extensive contamination with red blood cells and white blood cells. SELPHYL® removes virtually all contaminating cells and is independent of the operator technique. PRP is converted to PRFM through a controlled process, creating a scaffold that protects and preserves platelets.

The Power of Platelets

Platelets and other components in human blood migrate to a site of injury. Platelets are known to release various growth factors that respond to tissue injury, initiating and promoting healing. By concentrating platelets at the site of injury, physicians have the potential to enhance the body’s natural capacity for healing.

WHAT AREPRP INJECTIONS (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA)?

PRP, by definition, refers to platelets in plasma, where the platelet concentration is generally considered to be twice the normal concentration in whole blood. Nowhere in the definition of PRP is there a description for including red blood cells (RBC) or white blood cells (WBC). These cells should be removed as much as possible from a PRP preparation.

Some kits that tout high platelet concentrations do so at the expense of having contaminating RBCs or WBCs – these cells are known to have inflammatory and catabolic effects – just the opposite of the desired result. If the PRP in the syringe has any tinge of pink or red, you are most likely injecting a preparation with RBC contamination.

PRP INJECTIONS TREATMENT

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. In this way, a PRP Injection uses each patient’s own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.

First, the doctor draws blood from the patient’s arm and then separates the PRP from the rest of the blood’s components.

After injecting lidocaine to numb the treatment area, the doctor carefully injects the PRP into multiple places under the skin. The platelets break down and release their growth factors, which trigger the natural processes of cell proliferation and tissue renewal.

The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes, and most people can resume their normal activities immediately afterward.

FAQ

It can help the body restore itself, and it takes just a few weeks to see a significant difference. Some people will notice changes within the first week, but considerable changes come at the three to four-week mark for most people. Those will continue to improve until peak results hit at about three months.

Pre-Procedure Guidelines:

● At least three to four days before your procedure, discontinue anti-inflammatory medications.
● One to two weeks before your procedure, stop any blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins.
● One to two weeks before your procedure, stop systemic steroids.

Doctors use PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) to encourage healing and reduce inflammation. A doctor doing a PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injection will first draw blood from the person undergoing treatment. The costs for Platelet-Rich Plasma injections can range from $500 to $2,000, according to Scientific American. Side effects can include mild nausea, passing out, and dizziness.

Many people also wonder how long PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Injections last. There have been studies done to suggest that PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections can be effective for 6-9 months.

You may feel more pain at first since we are causing swelling in the already sore area. The swelling is needed for the blood cells to start helping you heal for the long term.

A PRP injection is generally recommended to treat tendon or muscle injuries with a 70% to 80% success rate.

As the PRP Injections solution consists of a person’s blood components, there are few risks of reacting to the solution itself. However, people undergoing PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatments for hair loss may experience the following side effects: mild pain at the injection site and scalp tenderness.

Generally speaking, PRP Injections are not painful; however, the discomfort level depends on the part of the body being treated. Injections into the joint are of minimal discomfort.

The patient should avoid washing the treatment area for 48 hours. After that, it is all right to use hair and skincare products and continue with topical medications.

● Pain In The Injured Area
● Some People Who’ve Undergone PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy Complain About An Acute Ache Or Soreness In The Spot Of The Injection
● Infection
● No Improvement In Injured Area
● Allergic Reaction
● Blood Clot
● Skin Discoloration

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Doesn’t Guarantee A Permanent Solution To Your Problem.

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is relatively safe, and the main drawback is post-procedure discomfort. Occasionally, a patient may experience a mild fever, swelling of the injected area, body aches, and fatigue for up to 3 days.

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections may not be appropriate for a patient with a medical condition that could worsen or spread with injections, such as an active infection, a metastatic disease, or certain skin diseases. PRP may not be appropriate for persons with specific blood and bleeding disorders.

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) consist of a large number of proteins and growth factor mediums. Due to its rich tissue repairing components, PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) can be successfully administered to select hair loss cases.

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) has anti-inflammatory properties; it decreases inflammation and it will accelerate the healing process. As a result, PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) will reduce the pocket depth and increase the attachment gain.

The PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) accelerate and boosts healing, so your body can repair significant amounts of damage that it can’t handle by itself. Research has shown that Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP can help you regenerate cartilage that’s been degraded by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

The first week after receiving a PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injection, you should rest and forgo exercise. At this stage, the platelets are just beginning to attach correctly. The platelets may not adhere if you work out or stretch too much, rendering the injections useless.

For a minimum of 5 hours after the PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) application to your skin, do NOT: wash your skin, expose the treated area/s to direct high heat, or engage in activities that will get you wet or cause you to sweat (e.g., blow dryer, sun exposure, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, scorching shower, hot yoga, strenuous exercise, etc.

PRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a safer alternative to dermal fillers, and the results are typically even better than you get with dermal fillers.

Studies have shown that the best candidates forPRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy in Dallas are those whose hair loss is recent since it can be difficult to revive long-dormant hair follicles. Ideally, a patient’s scalp will feature so-called “weak-quality” hair growth where active hair follicles remain.

A 2015 study of 10 people receivingPRP Injections (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections every 2 to 3 weeks for three months showed improvements in the number of hairs, the thickness of those hairs, and the strength of the hair roots.

PRP contains all those growth proteins, and cytokines studied and shown to stimulate and enhance follicle function. Remember, hair loss is caused by shrinking the follicle until it produces thin and short hair or no hair. Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP treatment strengthens those weakened follicles.

In all likelihood, very few people do have a chance of reversing their grey hair with Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP.

Would you please eat a typical breakfast or lunch the day of your PRP session? Drink a bottle of water (500 mL) at least 2 hours before your session. We recommend you take a hot shower to wash your hair that evening after the treatment to promote the effects of PRP.

PRP therapy is more effective and durable than cortisone injections. It doesn’t wear off like a pain injection.

Since these cells are unspecialized, they can convert into any cell the body needs, such as damaged tissue, cartilage, or bone. Another critical difference between the two therapies is that PRP helps restore or accelerate the body’s existing healing process. In contrast, stem cell therapy is used to regenerate tissue that is lost.

After such care, results typically last a minimum of nine to 18 months. However, the benefits can last as long as two years, depending on aging, sun exposure, and genetics. The time variation is because everyone’s body metabolizes fillers differently.

PRP doesn’t dissolve any filler.

Despite the accessibility of the PRP procedure and the relative ease with purchasing Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP kits, cosmetic and medical practices should never advise patients to conduct PRP therapy at home.

Botox and PRP injections can be safely combined in one treatment session. Both have been extensively tested and have demonstrated proven results for years. You may experience minimal side effects, such as some soreness and redness around the injection sites, but any side effects should fade after 24-48 hours.

PRP is a less expensive alternative to more dangerous practices. PRP functions to lighten the dark under-eye circles quickly. Because PRP is made of your blood, it couldn’t be safer. It also costs a fraction of what you’d pay for the alternatives, and it lasts longer.

PRP is obtained using the patient’s blood, similar to having blood drawn for a lab test. That blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the white blood cells and platelets. The platelets are then concentrated and injected back into the patient at the site of injury or pain.

PRP injection significantly improved melasma within six weeks of treatment in terms of MASI scores, patient satisfaction, and Antera® -assessed melanin levels. Hence, intradermal PRP injection could be used as an alternative or adjuvant therapy for melasma.

According to the American Red Cross, PRP is greater than or equal to 5.5 × 1010 platelets per 50 mL. PRP translates to a two- to sevenfold increase in platelet concentration compared with that of whole blood. The average human range of platelet concentration is 150 000 to 450 000 platelets per µL of whole venous blood.

PRP technology has been used for years in surgical applications and wound care.

The PRP injection process takes about 45 minutes and a majority of that time involves drawing and processing the patient’s blood for the injection.

Tonya is amazing!! She made me feel so comfortable and really listened to my concerns about my skin. She really cares and knows what she is doing. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!! I was concerned my first appointment but I just had my third and I can say it’s so worth it!!! Botox has been an incredible experience and I’m so happy to have tried it, I’m so much happier with my appearance and it looks incredibly natural. I’ve included before and after photos, neither photo is filtered or edited, you can see how makeup would collect in my forehead, and how the after it’s smooth and looks so lovely. It doesn’t feel weird or like I can’t move my muscles at all, it feels super natural. One of my biggest concerns was that I wouldn’t be able to emote with Botox but that’s just not true at all. I feel so confident and that is thanks to Tonya!

  • At least three to four days before your procedure, discontinue anti-inflammatory medications.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue any blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins.
  • One to two weeks before your procedure, discontinue systematic steroids
  • At least one month before your procedure, stop steroid injections
  • On the day of your procedure, eat a full, healthy breakfast and be sure to drink plenty of water
  • Please be advised that if you take chronic oral steroids, a discontinuation plan will need to be discussed with your primary care provider as abrupt stoppage may cause side effects.

PRP INJECTIONS (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA)
AFTERCARE

After your treatment session, we recommend that all patients rest on the day of their procedure. We advise limited use of the treatment area for the next two days, but the movement is encouraged. Limited use helps the joint recover as the treatment is absorbed by the area’s surrounding tissues.

0 – 3 days post-procedure guidelines

  • After your treatment, there is a chance you’ll experience some mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site. Discomfort is normal, and it is a sign that your body is healing as it adjusts to the treatment.
  • It is best to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help promote healing.
  • You mustn’t take ANY medications following your procedure unless specifically directed otherwise by a physician. NO medicine is a must because any drug can affect the healing process or other adverse effects.

Therefore, discontinue use of any of these medications post-procedure for best results:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications for at least two weeks post-procedure
  • Blood-thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins for 3-4 days post-procedure
  • Systematic steroids for two weeks post-procedure
  • Other important guidelines to follow after your procedure are:
  • Avoid applying ice or heat to the injection site for the first 72 hours post-procedure
  • Don’t take a hot bath or go to a sauna for the first few days post-procedure
  • Avoid consumption of any alcoholic beverages for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid showering for the first 24 hours following your procedure
  • Limit caffeine consumption for the first week post-procedure
  • Avoid smoking

3 – 14 days post-procedure guidelines

  • At this point in your healing, you should gradually increase your daily activities.
  • 3 to 14 days is also when you can begin exercises. Proper exercise is a vital part of long-term results, and we can help you determine which exercises are best suited for your needs before your procedure.
  • Ice can be applied 3-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes as needed for comfort
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (such as Tylenol) can be taken to help manage any residual pain at this time, take as directed
  • Continue to avoid alcoholic beverages, smoking, or excessive amounts of caffeine

3 – 4 weeks post-procedure guidelines

  • We highly encourage you to begin physical therapy to aid in your long-term healing and continued recovery at this point in your healing.
  • A follow-up appointment will be made for you to meet with our physician to review your healing process. You must keep this follow-up visit even if your recovery is going well.
  • If there are any adjustments to your customized treatment plan, this is when our physician will be able to make those decisions.
